Stormy Sky - 30 in January 2014

                                           Acrylic with Palette Knife, 6x6"

I started this one with 20 minutes of my lunch hour yesterday and finished it last night when I got home.  This one is from one of my photos.  I found it very difficult to get soft cloud edges with the palette knife and ended up using my finger, which is very strange for me, since I normally paint with gloves on to avoid touching the paint.  I wonder if I can prevail upon two friends who usually paint with palette knives to do a demo of clouds on their blogs--Carol, Jacklyn?

How is everybody who is in the challenge doing at this point?  I find myself needing to be more into my own thing and having less time to look at everyone else's work.  Yesterday morning, I used my time before work to scan and blog the painting on yesterday's post, and that is what I will need to do this morning, too.  Then, my next time to check email and Feedly is normally my lunch hour, but I painted on my lunch hour.  And last night, I also painted.  I haven't had time to look at all the paintings on Leslie's blog in a few days.  I know it's a good thing for my painting life to be more focused on my own process, but I do miss all the inspiration!  So, how are you guys doing???

I like your stormy sky and I agree, it seems we all have less time than in September. I try to enter comments but sometimes I can't even view all the work. My Challenge is going ok. My goal is to try new things, paints, methods, surfaces etc. and I am having fun with that. I just bought some Arches for oil paper and I will try that out today. I need to stay one day ahead because when I finish it is too dark to photograph. I usually ppost first thing in the AM before work.

Sandra, it's good to see that someone can relate to my feeling time-pushed. I think part of the challenge it taking care of ourselves during this month, in addition to do doing our paintings. For some of us, I guess that means missing seeing some of the work of others...staying ahead is great! I'm glad you are in a rhythm of posting and painting.

Try using a wide rounded knife with circular motions!!! I use my fingers a lot and also paper towels and baby wipes!!!
I am also finding the second set of ten a bit stressful... it is absolutely impossible to look at all the work... and there are a lot I like... maybe after the challenge I will go back ... best to use every window of time to "paint/play"

Thanks for the advice, Carol! I knew you could help. Do you want to do a demo on your blog? I'm SO glad to hear you describing the painting as paint/play...

I look quickly at the work but I' m using the time to improve my paintings. I look for the artist s I follow but I have not taken the time to meet new artists like I have in the past. I'm doing better in this challenge than the last two because I really feel a lot of growth coming. Time is pretty precious this month so I'm doing my best not to spread myself too thin.

Sharon: I see growth in your work, too, so whatever you are doing, I think it's great and it is working for you!

Barbara: Thank you so much. I love when I hear from you. And you are a role model for having fun with painting!

Excellent knife work Meredith. I liked yesterday's painting also with the touch of warm in it. Thank you so much for the encouraging comments on my blog. You are such a sweetheart. I really needed it. I managed to finish the commission and post it today :).

Hi Meredith! I found you through the challenge as I browse all the wonderful work. I just love the depth your clouds painting has and I agree with Barbara, I think they are perfect the way they are. Isn't that the way it goes? We strive for something in our minds and when it comes out differently on canvas, we think that somehow it's not right or good. I am going through the same thing... but am learning to let it go.

I'm glad to see here so many others are trying to figure out the time restraints with this challenge and it's not just me. This is my first one with the 30/30 and I had no idea how little time I actually do have to paint in my day. I'm taking a day off today, I needed it. I did paint, I just didn't post. I find that I browse the artists paintings and pick a few that grab my attention and then go check them out a bit closer and try to connect with them even if just for the moment. I am glad I'm attempting the challenge though. So great to meet you Meredith! ~Jaime

Beautiful painting, Meredith. I like the clouds as they are, their color is just right to me. Daily painting is a little difficult at the time being for I tend to mess my watercolors and not to find subkect matters. But I will go on...

Jaime: Thanks for visiting and for your wonderful, thoughtful comment. It relieves me that others are time-pressed and need a break sometimes. Wonderful to meet you, too!

Annaig: So nice to see you here again, and thank you for the comment on my painting. I know it is very difficult doing daily paintings when you want to spend more time on a painting. I really like your work, though...

Meredith, I think your knife work is outstanding! What I do see, and have experienced myself is acrylic doesn't give me soft edges. (That is why my acrylic paintings stay hidden!) Is there a medium that would give you longer working time, for the clouds? I think YOU are using this challenge JUST RIGHT! Exploring new things is good, and you are showing us all courage and terrific paintings!

Tatiana, Thank you so much for visiting and for your nice comment. I think it's great you are finding inspiration in the other artists' work during this challenge. Your paintings of waves are amazing...looks like you are using a knife, too.

Jacklyn: This paint, although acrylic, couldn't be any wetter if it were oil, the way I applied it!!! I'm just sooooo used to applying with a brush, having it dry quickly, and then working my edges differently than an oil painter would, via dry brush technique. I'll send you an email in case you don't see this. Many thanks, too, for your compliments of the knife work and for how I am working this challenge...means so much to have you say that...
